Getting on the CiF Map

Please note that whatever my personal politics may be this is a non partisan project – I’m simply interested in seeing the political make up of the CiF readership.

For anyone not included in the CiF map, but would like to be (for those already mapped skip ahead to step 2):

Step 1:

please go to politicalcompass.org and take their test:

http://politicalcompass.org/test

copy the numbers after the following sub headings, and keep them for step 3 :

Economic Left/Right:

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian:

Step 2:

(this includes anyone already on the map), get your Machiavelli rating (thanks to cmnimo for suggesting it), which will be your Axis of Evil(tm) measurement here:

http://bob.bofh.org/~robm/misc/MachIV.html

Grab all your scores and go to step 3.

Step 3
post your score(s) here (you don’t need to bother with registering just pot a guest but include your CiF name) or the Guardian comment cartoon section. I check periodically throughout the day and will add in anything/anyone new.

All told the combined tests take about 3 – 5 minutes.

The political compass score will place you in one of the coloured areas, while the Mach rating will rate you on your ability to be amoral, scheming and manipulative.

  1. I’m finding it hard to admit this. I’ve looked at other people’s scores and now realise I’m a nut case:

    Economic L/R -8.88
    Social libertarian/authoritarian -7.18
    Machiavellian score 37.

Are there any other people, with a pathetic M score, down there at the bottom far left with me?

    • Hi Heather Mcdougall

sorry for the lengthy wait – your Axis of Evil score suggests you’ll but closer to the Dalai Lama than most so don’t be down hearted. The next update will be posted later today so check for your cublet

Just came across a link to this site on CiF and thought I’d forward my scores:

    Econ L/R = -9.88
    Soc Lib/Auth = -7.23
    Mach IV = 39

I also posted this on the ‘Bloody Milton Friedman thread by mistake. Sorry about that!

  7. RobertSnozers says:

I was a bit surprised by this as I had increasing thought of myself as ‘centre-left’ in recent years. Anyway, my results are:

    Economic Left/Right: -9.00
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.72

…Which is apparently to the libertarian/left of the Dalai Lama. I’m as shocked as he is, especially as not that long ago on CiF someone called me a ‘far right neo-fascist warmonger’ or something like that, and I have a tendency to leap to the defence of PFI. Hey ho.

Amazing what one finds when wondering about the recent crop of Peterloo Massacre avatars, at least my google-fu is clearly working.

    Anyway:
    Economic Left/Right: -4.88
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.69
    Mach IV: 50

Still think I’m somewhat right of centre, but maybe the centre’s moved.

Rather fed up of being seemingly on the polar opposite end of the spectrum to any people i can vote for πŸ˜›

    • Hi Koichan

I know exactly how you feel about being far removed from the politics we’re being offered – this was what really prompted me to start this graphing project.

I was going to run another update in a few days – my schedule got a knocked a bit off during the party conferences so you won’t have long to wait to see your own cubelet in the lush green uplands πŸ™‚

    Hello D.C.

I’ve had a go at the tests and here’s the scores.

It seems that, according to the scores, I make both Ghandi and the Dalai Lama look like wishy-washy liberals.

    Economic L/E -9
    S L/A – 8.97

    Mach 40

No idea what this all makes me, I can’t be an old hippy, I could never afford the fashionable clothes, tickets to festivals or all the drugs and never went to Uni πŸ˜‰

Not sure how the Mach rating works, does 71 mean I’m nice and cuddly?
Or do these scores put me on par with Joe Stalin?

  26. FreemanMoxy says:

    Hi, Sir Digger, FreemanMoxy here!

I’ve been placed in pre-mod, so can’t really be arsed to comment on CiF at the moment, but it’s nice to see you battling the forces of Twattery, along with the others. Anyhoo, here’s my test results so I can be plotted on your thingummy. They came as little surprise to me, and doubtless not to you either:

    My political compass
    Economic Left/Right: -9.50
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.92

    51 on the Machiavellian Scale

Smashing! I’m off to try and create a red and black Peterloo Massacre avatar now.

    Peace Up.

    FM

    • Hi FreemanMoxy

good to see you but sorry to hear of your CiF woes

I’ll add your data in to the mix in the next update you should be in the vicinity of the Dalai Lama politcally but slight more amoral πŸ˜€
I’ll watch out for you custom avatar and add it to the gallery

    • Hi Kerfuffling

ahh – you should check the vertical height of your cubelet label I think – the lower it is the closer you get to people like Stalin or Hitler. The higher you go the closer to the Dalai Lama and we haven’t yet had anyone at the same altitude as the Dalai Lama. I’m not excluding the possibility – I’m just saying it’s rare πŸ˜€

  30. Ganglare says:

Thanks for doing this Sir Digby,

I really don’t comment much but thought you could use the info about who uses the site (& reads/recommends/FB posts articles from The Guardian). Besides, I find myself agreeing with many of your posts that I come across.

  33. Gangalare says:

Hello all & thank you for the kind welcome.

I wander a bit (all who wander are not lost), but will try to visit fairly regularly. Sometimes the amount of information I come across can be a bit overwhelming and forces me to take a break.

  35. lightacarrot says:

I missed you – come back here and speak more – now! None of this deadline business we need you here. Even if its only to speak a while……

You still in pre-mod? I’m just out but have had a final warning. Oh – sad I missed you.

NB I’m now being premodded on The Gruaniad – apparently commenting today that I didn’t get the impression that James Murdoch was innocent was enough to send them over the edge.

They don’t let you tell people you’re being pre-modded so I posted an acrostic:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/blog/2011/nov/10/phone-hacking-james-murdoch-live?commentpage=12#comment-13225015

Catch it before the censor realizes!

  40. LAC says:

    Hi there VSLVSL

Yes pre mod is horrible isn’t it – Kertwang and I have been in it four times and have been told a ban could be on the cards next time round although that doesn’t really stop me doing what I have to do and so far have been lucky. Call in here when you get frustrated and if you see anything dodgy on what you see on the pages of the Guardian or elswhere in the media go ahead and post them in the other site – and be good now – just post inane comments and they’ll soon let you out.

  41. LAC says:

………Oh I see that Digby already said much of the same – you can ignore mine – apart from the well wishes etc. etc. which still stand of course πŸ™‚

  42. vslvsl says:

Thanks to both of you for your comments – it’s not the first time they’ve done it to me, but on this occasion the comments I made were so innocuous that there are no circumstances in which the action could be justified.

Whatever Rushbridger may be writing about editorial policy the practice in the CIF area simply is not consistent with his assertions.
